At Pool Quay you’ll be shown how to load the boat safely, getting in and out safely and answer any last questions before you’re launched on your way.
Adventure Day 1: This is the most rural part of the trip, spending the first your day is spent in the twists and turns along the border between England & Wales, which opens up into beautiful scenery. After a river beach stop for lunch, you start to enter large open swathes of farmland, a real patchwork of colours and intermittent woodlands, through protected sites of scientific interest along to your first camp of the journey at Montford Bridge, with campsites and local pub & restaurant.
Adventure Day 2: Head off in the early morning sunshine and you’ll meander through one of the most spectacular natural environments of your trip for 12 miles. Eventually you will hear the buzz of the medieval market town of Shrewsbury, which the river makes a loop around. Perfect for a stop to explore with independent shops, eateries and museums five minutes from the river. Then as you leave the town, and around your first weir, you’ll head into more lovely countryside to your next camp.
Adventure Day 3: The River Severn snakes through a wide valley, under Shropshire’s extinct volcano, The Wrekin, as you head for the incredible experience of canoeing through The Ironbridge Gorge. Perfect photo opportunity as you come up to the World Heritage site and the Iron Bridge itself. A quick stop to avoid the rivers only rapids at Jackfield, there are a number of options for accommodation and excellent places to eat and a chance to explore a little of this World Heritage site.
Adventure Day 4: More beauty awaits you as you travel onto Hampton Loade, via the fascinating picturesque town of Bridgnorth. Don’t miss the hermit caves in the sandstone cliffs above Bridgnorth, then the town itself with its High Town and Low Town along the riverside, with a Victorian funicular railway linking the two. You’ll be totally awed by the stunning and dramatic scenery that surrounds this stretch of The Severn, ended up with a night at a countryside campsite.
Adventure Day 5: Another scenic stretch of river with the Wyre Forest Valley beside you. Then you’ll travel through the attractive Georgian town of Bewdley and on to Stourport-On-Severn, with its lively boating community so a great place to stock up, close to the water. Its giant lock gates represent where the river is becoming more ‘engineered’, connecting it to the canal network and changing the character of the landscape again to more open arable farmland. Depending on your energy levels you can camp before Worcester or after Worcester, or choose a night in a hotel and explore the city and it’s rich heritage from romans to civil war times.
Adventure Day 6: From Worcester river and your journey slows its pace, due to the frequent weirs and locks along this stretch. Your first town of note is Upton-on-Severn, with its many festivals. You’ll paddle down to Tewkesbury Cotswolds medieval market town, where you can stay or camp. Lots to discover in this unique riverside town, with over 1000 years of history, incredible museums, and nearby nature reserve.
Adventure Day 7: Your last day is a slightly shorter paddle with the last stretch to Gloucester. Experience some of the tidal effects on the river and we’ll be there to greet you and celebrate your achievement at Gloucester. Pick up will be arranged as needed.
