River Support

River Severn Canoe Trip Support | Big Severn Adventure

What does support really mean?

A self-guided canoe trip should feel independent, not unsupported. I plan and support your River Severn journey from launch to collection, and if something changes, I help work out what happens next.

More than a telephone number

There is a big difference between being told, “Call if you need anything,” and knowing there is a practical response behind that call.

When I say your trip is supported, I mean I know the route, the awkward landings, the road access and the alternatives when the original plan stops working. I also have the tracker information, vehicles, spare equipment and flexibility needed to act.

Supporting guests already on the river is part of my working day. It is not something I fit in after everything else has finished.

  • Daily check-ins and GPS tracking
  • Practical help when plans change

What support means during your trip

Most days it stays quietly in the background. When it is needed, it becomes practical.

What sits behind the adventure

  • A route planned around realistic daily distances and suitable overnight stops
  • A full safety and route briefing before I launch you
  • Direct phone and WhatsApp contact while you are travelling
  • Daily check-ins and a GPS tracker fitted to the boat
  • Knowledge of landings, portages, road access and alternative stopping points

When I step in

  • You have missed a planned stop and need a workable alternative
  • An equipment fault needs dealing with
  • Weather, river conditions, energy or timings change the day
  • You need to finish earlier than planned
  • A difficult landing, carry or portage needs physical help

If you do not need me, the adventure stays untouched. If you do, the right help is there.

Support without taking over

This is still your adventure. I am not following you down the river or controlling every stop.

When everything is going well, you paddle at your own pace, choose where to pause and enjoy the freedom of a self-guided journey. The planning and backup are there without getting in the way.

  • Your pace and your daily rhythm
  • Advice when you ask for it
  • Practical action when it is genuinely needed

Support adapted to you

Not everybody needs the same help. You may be completely capable of paddling the journey but know that a steep landing, awkward carry or particular portage will be harder for you.

Tell me before the trip. I can identify the points that are likely to be difficult and, where practical, plan to be there to help.

  • Discuss your needs beforehand
  • Identify the points where help matters
  • Keep the rest of the adventure independent

A real example from the 2026 season

Before they realised they needed help

Twice this season, guests paddled past the same difficult overnight get-out. It is easy to miss and, once you are downstream, very hard to paddle back to.

I could see from the tracker that they had passed it. Rather than wait an hour for them to realise, paddle farther downstream and make the problem harder, I got in the van and went out to meet them.

I helped them off the river and dropped them at their accommodation. On both occasions they were surprised to see me, because they had not called and did not yet know they needed help.

That is what support means to me. See the problem developing, understand what happens next and get on with sorting it.

What I can help with

These are ordinary multi-day trip problems, not dramatic emergencies. Dealt with early, most have a straightforward answer.

Missed stops and route questions

I can help establish where you are, what suitable access lies ahead and which next move makes sense.

Equipment problems

I will first work out whether the problem can be solved where you are. If a genuine fault needs repair or replacement, I will arrange the practical response.

Changing energy or timings

If the planned distance no longer feels right, I can help shorten the stage, identify another exit or change the collection plan.

Weather and river conditions

If conditions change, I can help reassess the stage rather than forcing the original plan to continue.

An earlier finish

If you need to end the journey early, I will help agree a sensible landing and work out a practical collection.

Difficult physical points

Where you have told me beforehand, I can plan support around a landing, carry or portage that would otherwise be a barrier.

The exact response will always depend on your location, safe river access, road access and the nature of the problem. The important difference is that I start working on the practical answer when I know something has changed.

How tracking and check-ins are used

The tracker is not there simply so I can say the boats are tracked. It gives me useful information when a decision needs to be made.

Alongside daily check-ins and direct contact, it can help confirm your progress, show when a planned landing has been passed and give me a sensible place to start if something does not look right.

What the tracker does

  • Shows the boat’s location when I need to check it
  • Adds context when a check-in is late or plans change
  • Helps me make better decisions about landings and access

It is not an emergency beacon and it is not watched every second. If you need urgent help, call rather than waiting for me to notice the tracker.

Support versus emergencies

Immediate danger means calling the emergency services first

The support I provide is practical support for your trip. It does not replace the emergency services.

If somebody is in immediate danger, seriously injured or needs urgent rescue, call 999 or 112 first. Contact me afterwards when it is safe to do so, and I can help with the practical response around the incident.

The “what if?” questions

What happens if something does not go to plan?

What if we miss our intended stopping point?
Call or message me as soon as you realise. I will help establish where you are, what suitable access lies ahead and whether the answer is a different landing, a changed overnight plan or a practical collection. The tracker may also help me spot what has happened sooner.
What if we are more tired than expected?
The original mileage is never more important than having a safe and enjoyable trip. I can help shorten the stage, identify a suitable exit or agree an earlier finish that works with river and road access.
What if equipment develops a fault?
Call or message me. I will first work out what has happened and whether it can be dealt with where you are. If a genuine equipment fault needs repair or replacement, I will work out the practical way to get it sorted.
Can support be adapted around my mobility, strength or confidence?
Yes, where you tell me before the trip. You may be fully capable of paddling but benefit from help at a steep landing, carry or portage. I can identify those points with you and explain what practical support can be arranged.
Does having support turn this into a guided trip?
No. You paddle independently and shape your own days. My support stays in the background while things are going well and becomes more visible only when you ask for help or a practical issue needs attention.

From a real trip

“Amazing experience canoeing down the Severn for three days, staying at B&Bs on the way. Nigel was great, helped with the planning and a tricky portage. Fabulous holiday, would thoroughly recommend.”
