A Fully Guided River Severn Expedition

This is not the standard self-guided Big Severn Adventure.

On this trip an experienced guide travels with the group throughout the journey, helping with route decisions, river reading, daily planning and the practical side of moving a small expedition down the river.

You still paddle the miles. You still complete the journey yourself. You simply have the reassurance of travelling with someone who knows the route and understands the river.

Why Travel With A Guide?

A five day canoe journey is a proper adventure. For some people, the biggest barrier is not the paddling. It is the uncertainty.

Where do we stop? How far should we go today? What happens if the river changes? Are we on schedule? Have we chosen the right place to camp?

This guided version removes much of that pressure. You can focus on the experience, the landscape, the group and the journey itself.

You get the feel of a real expedition, with the confidence of knowing you are not working everything out alone.

The Journey

Over five days we paddle the full navigable length of the River Severn, starting at Pool Quay near Welshpool and finishing at Gloucester Docks.

The route moves through Shropshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire, passing quiet countryside, riverside villages, historic towns and some of the most recognisable places on the Severn.

You will paddle beneath the world-famous Iron Bridge at Ironbridge Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, experience the river changing from a winding country river into a major waterway, navigate large river locks and explore sections of the Severn that few people ever get to see.

The river is rich in wildlife, from kingfishers and herons to birds of prey overhead, with each day bringing new scenery and a constantly changing landscape.

By the time you reach Gloucester Docks, you’ll have paddled the full navigable length of Britain’s longest river — a journey few people ever experience.

Day By Day

Day 1 – Pool Quay to Shrewsbury

Meet the rest of your group, get settled on the water and begin the journey downstream. The first day is about finding the rhythm of expedition paddling and getting into the flow of the river.

Day 2 – Shrewsbury to Ironbridge

Paddle through one of the most scenic and historic sections of the River Severn, finishing in the Ironbridge area after passing through the Severn Gorge.

Day 3 – Ironbridge to the Bewdley reach

The river quietens again, with wooded banks, steady miles and a stronger sense of travelling through the heart of the Severn valley.

Day 4 – Bewdley to the Upton or Tewkesbury area

The river begins to widen and the character changes again. This is where the journey starts to feel much bigger.

Day 5 – Onward to Gloucester Docks

The final push. The miles add up, Gloucester slowly approaches and the journey finishes at the docks after completing the full navigable route.

Daily distances may be adjusted to suit river levels, weather, group pace and conditions.

Guided Trip Questions

Do I need canoeing experience?

No. Beginners are welcome, provided you are reasonably active and comfortable spending several hours a day outdoors.

Is this a guided trip or a course?

It is an adventure, not a formal course. You will naturally learn paddling, river reading and expedition skills as the journey unfolds.

Where do we stay?

We camp beside the river using a mixture of campsites and suitable riverside stops along the route.

How hard is it?

The challenge is consistency over five days rather than extreme fitness. Most reasonably active people can complete it with the right attitude.

What happens if conditions change?

Your guide will monitor the river, weather and group pace throughout. Daily plans can be adjusted where needed.

Can solo travellers join?

Yes. This trip is suitable for solo travellers, couples and pairs of friends. The small group format is part of the experience.
